Recommended Drilling Fluids and Fluid Mixtures

The following are the recommended product names and mixtures for the use of foam with the Prospector Hammer.

M.I. Swaco

  1. Mix soda ash with water to bring PH up to 8 or 9
  2. Mix 1 pint (0.47 liters) per 300 gal (1140 liters) of “Poly Plus”. Note: You need no more than 28 to 30 seconds viscosity using a “Marsh cup and funnel”.
  3. Mix 1 pint (0.47) per 300 gal (1140 liters) of “Platinum Foam Plus”.
  4. Mix 1 pint (0.47) per 100 gal (380 liters) of “Rod Ease”.
  5. Inject into air stream at 2 to 3 gal (7 to 11 liters) per minute.

Cetco

  1. Mix soda ash with water to bring PH up to 8 or 9
  2. Mix “Insta Vis Plus” with water until you get 30 second viscosity using a “Marsh cup and funnel”.
  3. Mix 1 quart (0.95 liters) per 50 gal (190 liters) of “Versa Foam Plus”.
  4. Inject into air stream at 2 to 3 gal (7 to 11 liters) per minute.

Baroid

  1. Mix soda ash with water to bring PH up to 8 or 9
  2. Mix “Easy Mud” with water until you get 30 second viscosity using a “Marsh cup and funnel”.
  3. Mix 1 gal (3.8 liters) per 100 gal (380 liters) of “Quick foam”.
  4. Inject into air stream at 2 to 3 gal (7 to 11 liters) per minute.

Each supplier makes a defoamer that will disburse the foam rapidly for a quick clean up.

Note: These mixtures were taken from the above mentioned drilling fluid suppliers. The contractor should discuss these mixing rates with each supplier to educate themselves and all crew members better. They should operate their oil flow rates from the support pack at a higher flow to ensure good lubrication. At the end of each bore, the Prospector hammer should be rinsed out with fresh water and oiled internally before storing away until next bore.
